St. Lucia's CofE Primary School - Waste

St. Lucia's CofE Primary School - Waste

PROJECT

Why did you decide to undertake this project (i.e. Particular issue in school or part of a larger campaign) and what aims did you have starting out?

Club decided that they wanted to be as close to 100% waste free as possible – project involved whole school plus parents (waste free packed lunches)

ACTION

How was the project delivered and was it integrated into the curriculum?

We completed a waste audit which showed we were 74% recycling or reusing and then a year later we re audited and had increased our waste recycling/reusing or waste reduction to 98% - the children received lessons and outside visits from eco project managers to help them understand what they could do to save their planet.

CHALLENGES

Did you have to overcome any challenges to make the project succeed?

We had an issue with recycling plastic but now onw of the parents collects it from the school and takes it to the county recycling plant – the local community also use the facility at the school to recycle their plastic.

PUPIL LEADERSHIP

How did you get the children involved? How did they have ownership?

The children were in charge of the whole project – they decided what they wanted to do and then wrote letters/designed posters etc. and took part fully in all the activities to help reduce waste – they encourages their parents to recycle and it was a whole school and local community effort.

We now have an almost waste free school and we purchase stock that is either recycled or can be recycled.

RESULT

How have the children benefitted from the project and any other benefits for the school (reduced costs, cleaner school etc)?  Please include any figures and analysis if appropriate.

See figures above. Whole school is much more aware of their environment and how they can save it.  They have a litter  free school of which they are justly proud.

RESOURCES

Did you use any educational resources such as The Pod (If yes, indicate which activities), receive any support from parents, staff and outside agencies?  Did you have to source funding for the project?

Full support from parents, staff and the local village.

LESSONS LEARNED

What advice would you give to schools that want to follow in your footsteps?

Please contact us to talk about what we have achieved – the children would love to talk about what they have done and offer any help that they can to allow other children to benefit from a cleaner world.

NEXT STEPS

Has this project driven other Eco-Schools ideas and what is the school working on next?
We have a very active eco club and at present we are looking at saving energy and water.
