Early Years

Introduction

What's it all about?

Rupert the Bear with a Green FlagEco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey. Eco-Schools is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

There are 46 countries around the world which run Eco-Schools, linking more than 40,000 schools – from the UK to France, from Morocco to South Africa.

Eco-Schools is free and it makes tackling sustainable issues manageable and easy for all children’s centres and nurseries.

Once registered, schools follow a simple seven step process which helps them address nine key environmental themes:

  • Water
  • Litter
  • Biodiversity
  • Healthy Living
  • Energy
  • School Grounds
  • Transport
  • Waste
  • Global Perspectives

Who is this guidance for?

  • Children's centres
  • Nurseries
  • Sure Start centres
  • Playgroups

N.B For simplicity, all of the above will be referred to as centres.

Why should you join?

Eco-Schools has teamed up with Rupert Bear to create a separate set of resources and guidance notes which are more suitable for early years. These include:

  • How to create an Action Team
  • Carry out the Environmental Review
  • Brand new criteria for the Bronze, Silver and Green flag award
  • Separate dedicated section of the website
  • Colouring sheets
  • Dot to Dots
  • Introductory short stories
  • Rupert Bear image for each topic

The Green Flag application form has also been modified to meet the new award criteria and process. Once registered centres will follow the seven step process already in place for Eco-Schools. The main difference in criteria is that adults will now lead the programme with the aim of increasing the environmental awareness of the children.

How do you join?

Becoming an Eco-School couldn’t be easier. Registration can be completed through the homepage of this website. Once registered centres are then free to work towards the new criteria and gain an award – Bronze, Silver and the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity.

Bronze and Silver are both self accredited through this website and Green Flag is externally assessed by Keep Britain Tidy.
