Eco-Schools and Healthy Schools

Involvement in Eco-Schools demonstrates that a school is also committed to the Healthy Schools programme. Both initiatives promote the health and well-being of pupils and staff through a well planned, taught curriculum in a physical and emotional environment that promotes learning and healthy lifestyle choices. Similarly, both programmes involve the whole school community – from parents to governors and school staff.
The Healthy Schools programme focuses on the following four key themes:

  • Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE)
  • Healthy Eating
  • Physical Activity
  • Emotional Health & Well-being
Healthy living

One of the nine Eco-Schools themes is Healthy Living, which encourages pupils to make healthier food choices and learn about what healthy eating really means. This includes supporting local producers and discussing the use of fair trade products, which brings in an economic/international dimension to PSHE learning.

The Eco-Schools programme also encourages pupils to be more physically active and many schools set up gardening or vegetable patches, which not only provide a valuable outdoor learning experience but also physical activity, as pupils dig and create their own garden areas.

The underlying principle behind Eco-Schools is one of care, ensuring the emotional health and well-being of pupils:

  • Care for oneself
  • Care for each other (across cultures, distances and time)
  • Care for the environment (far and near).
