New Teaching Resources From the FSC
Stuck with linking sustainability to the curriculum? The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has developed new material to help teach children about the importance of the world’s forests and the role they can play in helping to protect them. These educational resources are now available in hardcopy on request from the FSC UK office
The pack has been entitled ‘Putting Forests First to Make them Last’ after the winning entry to our 2008 slogan competition submitted by Charlie Pope, aged 9. The education pack, produced with the support of Earthdreams and Garfield Weston Foundation, includes lesson plans, activity ideas, pledges and posters. The lesson plans look at forestry issues and then focus on FSC and the ways the pupils can help to promote responsible forestry. Whilst the resources are aimed primarily at Keystage 2 children they can be easily adapted for use with other age groups.
As part of the pack, children are invited to make a forest pledge to help FSC and protect forests, for example, by raising awareness of FSC in their school or community or by looking out for the logo when shopping. The pledges can be made individually, or as a group, and we hope to promote some of them on our website shortly.
The latest issue of WWF’s free termly poster resource for schools, Learn, has been produced in partnership with FSC UK. Copies of this are also available from the FSC UK office.
All the education resources are free of charge. Copies can also be downloaded from the FSC website. The pack has been developed with the support of Garfield Weston Foundation and Earthdreams, with paper donated by Tullis Russell Papermakers.
Given the increasing focus on sustainability within the curriculum, the FSC hopes that these packs will prove popular with teachers and pupils alike and plan to build on the Keystage 2 pack and produce similar material for older children in due course.
These resources will help teachers working through the Eco-Schools programme link sustainability to the curriculum, which is a required in order to gain a bronze, silver or green flag award.
