England is the 'dirtiest country in the World Cup'
With only days to go to the start of the World Cup, a new Keep Britain Tidy poll has revealed that people think England is the ‘dirtiest’ country taking part in the tournament.
More than 50 per cent of people thought that England took the title for the most littered country.
But it’s better news for the England team – our players were beaten to the dubious title of ‘dirtiest’ player by Chelsea and Ivory Coast centre forward Didier Drogba.
In the poll, Drogba – who has, over the years, faced accusations of diving and handling the ball – was named as the player who people thought would be ‘dirtiest’ on the pitch at the World Cup by 17 per cent of people, closely followed by Real Madrid forward and Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo.
It costs £780million every year to pick up litter from England’s streets and open spaces – more than it cost to build the new Wembley Stadium!
Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Phil Barton said: ‘To help our bid to host the World Cup in 2018 then we really need to clean up our act and make this country an attractive place to play host to one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
‘If the English think England is dirty, what must the rest of the world think? We need to have some pride in our country and to personal responsibility for not littering.
‘Obviously this is only a perception about England but it shows that, as a society, we all need to work together to make sure our local places are cleaner and more attractive.’
To reinforce the message that we need to clean up our act, Keep Britain Tidy is launching two posters and a car sticker to tie in with the start of the World Cup on June 11.
The posters carry the slogans ‘We don’t need Messi, C’mon England, Let’s keep it tidy!’ and ‘Have some pride, C’mon England, Let’s keep it tidy!’ and are available to order for free, along with the car sticker featuring the ‘Messi’ slogan.
